Rooting an S6...

If I were to "root" this thing, could I put it back to before Marshmallow?

Could I force the thing to at least stop updating - ever?

I've never rooted a phone before, but I hear there are now '1 click' rooter services or something?

I'm too old and grumpy to keep faffing about with a phone that keeps changing, especially when it changes for the worse.

hi.
if you root it then flash a custom rom then I think you could get an older base ie android 5.
....and it should stop your updates too

You don't need root to downgrade. All you need is a pc and a software flash tool called ODIN along with the firmware file to flash on your device. To stop the update notification may require rooting but keep in mind that you may trip the knox counter depending on what root tool you use.

Something Samsung has created in order to check the integrity of their devices. If the phone was exploited by rooting, a flag (a bit value of zero or one) gets flipped indicating you did something Samsung did not want you to do.

Check this thread I created for the links and how-to for Odin flash tool (http://androidforums.com/threads/guides-resources-rooting.1027492/). Be careful with this tool, ask for more information if you don't understand something. This tool has the capability to brick your device if you do something wrong.

Actually there is one change to the latest version of A, whatever the heck it's called, that makes it worth keeping, in that it FINALLY has a search function for the apps!

Considering the Goog made their money from search it's always struck me as a deliberate slap in the face that they force you to manually look through all the apps to find something.

I mean it's not like anyone at the Goog ever failed to think "Ooh, you know, search?"

Offering a search function was so obvious and so needed that I'm actually suspicious! Why now?

What it is that's so bad about this latest version that they want to tempt us into keeping it, by finally giving us the search function that Android should and easily could have had from version 1.0?

Somehow they tripped, slipped, and just clean forgot, ALL about search and search functions? Until now, for what is it, version 6? 7?

"Off to work at Google again today.. Mmm, wonder what we could possibly do to make Google phones running a Google operating system better...?"

But yeah, rant aside, if one were to trip this knox counter thing, what happens?

Do they try to remotely brick your phone? Do they... not offer any more updates? *looks hopeful*

I'm not sure what your rant was about. Knox counter is just a number that is checked whether you're allowed to use certain Samsung apps, nothing else happens. As far as OTAs go, they will still work as long as you flash SuperSU (root) systemless for marshmallow. Knox shouldn't screw you over from being able to install security updates. Odin flash tool is also another way to update.
