Rooting any mobile from pre pay place

Is it possible or does one need a contract phone? I've had tons of paygo phones, currently LG stylo 2 from boost mobile. Is it even possible to root paygo phones or does that destroy the paygo process and leave you with an unusable phone? Where you can't buy minutes any longer, etc?

It's no different between pay as you go or contract.

It will prevent things like banking apps working, but I can't see why it would affect PAYG (last time my kids had that I'd top up at an ATM anyway, so the phone never entered into the top-up process).
