Root Rooting effects

So far I have resisting rooting my nexus 7 because I have not found a need but have come to the conclusion I am now being restricted from doing things I feel should be routine functionality. Eg mounting a memory stick on using OTG cable. I know how (thanks to this forum) but have read that I will lose all data. I take it by data we mean all documents and apps?
 
Yep. Doing the unlock operation will reset it to the state it was in when you pulled it out of the box (except for being unlocked, of course). You'll have to tell it who you are again, and reinstall and reconfigure any apps you have added. Things that were located in the "cloud" come back (like the free movies, music, and magazines that came with it), but anything you added is gone. I wrote up my notes about this at: Nexus 7 Hacking
 
The device will be factory reset in the unlocking process. Thats why I always suggest unlocking the device as soon as you get it, and you can decide to root or not later.

This way you dont lose data

Plug you N7 into your computer to backup any files. You can do a screen shot (power +volume down) of your app drawer and home screens so you can redownload and recreate them.
 
Thanks guys. Its as I thought. Rebuilding from scratch isn't to bad (good chance to get rid of some rubbish) but some things that arent
