Can I still root?

Where did you buy the 32gb from and for how much?
Many places have been selling them since Friday
The normal price is $250
Cynical, even though I see you got it figured out, unlocking the bootloader is a easy as typing fastboot OEM unlock .
You just fastboot flash a custom recovery from there
Got it at Sam's (No Staples, Wal-marts, or Gamestops around me had them)
$250
It was weird to not have to worry about updating since Google isn't going to actively close root exploits. Been rooting phones for the last six years. this is a new adventure.
My first nexus device as well. Its so easy
Makes you wonder why phone companies don't do it like this. I mean, the hassles they've created haven't really stopped us...
Carriers don't like it when its so easy to root They would much rather sell phones with locked down bootloaders
I know that, but does it really change anything?
Carriers are the ones purchasing the phones from the manufacturers, so they have a LOT of pull. Verizon made Samsung lock down the boot loader on the s3
Wait, so are you running 4.2 or still 4.1.2?
Just 4.1.2. It came with 4.1.1,which surprised me as it's relatively new hardware.
I bought mine yesterday and it came with 4.1.0 thrn updated to 4.1.1 and then updated to 4.1.2. Idk why it wouldn't just take me straight to 4.1.2
What are the advantages to rooting?
The long answer can be found here: http://androidforums.com/faqs/443432-what-root-being-rooted-mean.html
The short answer is this: It gives you more options as to the customization and control of your device.
For my, the main advantages of rooting my N7 are the ability to:
-Freeze/erase system app I don't use (gmail, Play books, etc)
-Make a full system backup and store it off my device
-Install a custom kernel for better efficiency
-Use an OTG cable to connect a flash memory drive directly to my N7

I need to be rooted to do this? I'm not opposed to rooting but was hoping I could simply plug in the OTG with a flash drive (both of which I just ordered from Amazon) and use it.
My 7 is the 32G flavor and I don't need this but was going to use it to test it out for use with the N4 when I get it.
Today Santa delivered my 32 Gb Nexus 7! 2 day shipping from Google.
CAOK. JB 4.1.2. Charging now. Friday will be unlock and root /install custom recovery day. Load up my apps, set up email, calendars and sync with Google. I will give stock rom a few days to see how I like it before trying CNA or others. There is a rumor that JB Sourcery rom may be ported to Nexus 7. If so, that will be the one that will go on mine. I love it on my Galaxy Nexus. Just trying to figure out best way to get the pertinent stuff from my SD card on Galaxy Tab 7.0+ over to my N7 w/o getting a lot of extraneous stuff. Need music, ringtones, photos and videos I guess. If I can locate them all. Oh well, they're on a removable SD card so if I miss anything It'll still be there. Sure wish the N7 had one and a photo camera too but the support community for the N7 is robust while that for the GT7+ is rather anemic. Damn, I'm like a kid at Christmas!
Success. Used the wugfresh Root tool kit. Easy. Now playing with it. Seems much quicker and smoother than the GT7+ it replaces.Today Santa delivered my 32 Gb Nexus 7! 2 day shipping from Google.

Thanks, viper. I agree so far. Rumor is that a dev at Team Sourcery is looking at porting Sourcerey to the N7. That would truly be awesome! And so worth flashing!Honestly, the stock rom is awesome on the N7 and personally I don't think all the bells and whistles are necessary for this. I run Bugless Beast because I encountered some lag after the 4.1.2 and that fixed it for me. But BB is as stock as can be. On my GNex, I like the bells and whistles that JBS and others offer
