Rooting without a custom ROM

I'm planning to buy a Droid and plan to root it, mainly for the tethering. From what I'm reading it seems like everyone who roots installs a custom ROM, but I'd like to keep the stock user experience, just with tethering added on, for now at least. Is this going to be a problem? Sorry if this is a n00b question, but I've had trouble finding a comprehensive source of info on Android rooting.

There are ways to have root and still keep a stock experience. That's very easy in fact. You'll just have to wait until someone roots the Droid and you'll be all set.

Is there a way to ROOT the HTC Hero but keep the default ROM until HTC release 2.0 ?

I'd like to use a file manager and have been told I need to ROOT the Hero in order to gain access to files etc Also use Task manager and install apps to SD card.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this issue.

Many thanks.
