how do you root a Samsung galaxy precedent? and what are the pros and cons of doing so

Pros:
Gain full control of your phone
Install a custom ROM for a more recent Android than is officially supported
Overclock for performance or underclock for battery life
install a proper firewall.
install titanium backup pro to back up all your apps, and remove bloatware.
install a custom recovery, make a nandroid backup (a bit like a Windows restore point, but it's really a complete snapshot of you phone at that point in time.
Cons: possible to brick the phone if you're not careful. BUT if you read and fully understand what you're doing, that's unlikely.
lose your warranty (But your phone's most likely out of warranty by now.)
