Route 66 navigation app - need help

Hi all

I've got this app and am overall very pleased with it. It offers the option of downloading maps whilst you're at home connected to your wifi and I've therefore downloaded a map of the UK for my navigation purposes. I'm off to the Brecon Beacons and will need this facility as I doubt there's any masts or wi fi hotpots up there!

But I've got some questions as for some of the locations I'm going to, they are literally up a mountain and I will not only be relying on Route 66 Navigate to help me, but I have done a lot of additional planning and know that I need to get to certain location by a very specific route so that I can be sure I'm on the right track (and I do mean track because as I near my destination in some cases, road names are long gone - it's literally just tracks so if I enter that part of the drive at the wrong point (place) I could get really really lost and not be able to find my destination (hope that makes sense!!).

My questions are:

1. When a route has been calculated and several route options are shown how do I select the one I want - tapping the screen seems to make no difference. In some cases I need to follow a specific route and I don't want to set off on a journey now knowing which of the three possible routes I'm actually on! How do I select the one that I want to follow?

2. Again, on just some specific routes it's necessary to follow one route and one route only. Let's say I manage to select which route I want to follow, will I be asked if I want to swap to an alternative route (eg in the case of traffic) or will it just swap me and I won't know I've been swapped?

3. How to stop phone screen going to sleep when navigating? I would have hoped the app would turn off sleep mode for the screen during active navigation rather than the user having to do it manually, but is manually the only way to keep the phone screen from going to sleep??? Would I just go into my HTC Settings and change it there before setting off???

Many thanks for this and hope someone is further ahead in their use of Route 66 Navigate than me as I've only had it a short while and can't seem to do some of the things I want. Thanks!

Isobel.

Hi Isobel,

Hopefully I can help with most if not all of your questions. I'm running Navigate on my HTC One and Desire S, it should perform the same for you.

1. If I have 'Fastest' selected in 'Travel mode', I see one route in blue and, in most cases, up to two alternate routes in white. Each route will have a box with time and distance shown. If I tap on a white route or its box it will change to blue and the other route will change to white. Doesn't this happen for you? - I'm puzzled that you say tapping the screen makes no difference.

If I have 'Shortest' selected in 'Travel mode' I get only one route - in blue.

Is also possible to amend one of these routes by using the 'Drive via' function.

Tapping 'START' top right, will commence navigation on the blue route. (Tapping the two-flag icon will give you a turn by turn listing. Tapping the right facing arrow head will give you a full turn by turn preview/simulation of the route.)

2. As far as re-routing is concerned I think this only applies if you have the extra license for traffic information. I don't have it and have never been re-routed. If you have the traffic information you can go into Settings - Avoid traffic and choose Automatic, Ask always or Off.

3. In Settings - Backlight 'Always on' will over-ride your normal screen timeout and the screen will remain on while Navigate is running.

If you haven't already seen it, the following user guide might be useful :-

I recently bought a 30 dollar android phone specifically just to make a GPS out of it... I went with rt66 like you... Took me a day or two to get used to it.. Now I love it.

sedstar - I'm sure it's the way to go. Get away from those horrid Tomtoms with 'live' traffic that crashes the moment you enter traffic - NOT very good. A problem they have known about and done nothing about for several years - hence I'm off and not wasting extortionate amounts on their maps and 'services' ever again.

Onto brighter things, does anyone know, when you're setting up a navigation route using Route 66, can you put in Latitude and Longitude????

Yes it certainly was! I'm just baffled why it didn't post through onto the thread - I am sorry. Yes you answered all my questions thank you so much. Ah, clever you, I see the longitude/latitude option now - doh!!
