G'day all. I've done searches for this (apparently) android system file(?) and am staggered to find nothing about it.

What does rstech_knile do?

Why does it auto wake when the tablet is in 'sleep' mode?

Why does it regularly go on-line and consume more data than a day's web browser use. (I've had over 10MB in one session.)

Generic 9" tablet with Droid 4.4.2

The only thing I can find for that is this....
http://club.jd.com/consultation/1120415-47160230.html (Chinese)

Which is an Onda tablet, and it's saying that the firmware is damaged or corrupted. And if you can't flash it yourself from the website, to take it to an Onda service centre, or to call Onda tech support in Guangzhou, 020-87081400

Is your tablet an Onda?

BTW Onda, we have had some rather strange and sinister things reported on AF about some of their devices, such as built-in Chinese government censoring. Someone posted that he apparently couldn't get Facebook or Youtube with an Onda tablet in the UK. So I do think this rstech_knile might be something to be concerned about, could be spyware.

There's a company in Beijing called RStech, which does some sort of professional data-logging equipment. www.rstech.com.cn

G'day Mike.
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for delay - had problems registering.

"Is your tablet an Onda?"
It's an Aldi Onix AT9 - it is unknown who the actual manufacturer might be.

I have loaded an ap from Opera - 'Opera Max' - which does many things, one of which is the ability to block aps from accessing wifi and/or wireless broadband. I have now been able to stop or at least limit rstech-knile from internet access. The only problem is that the tablet has to be on 24/7, otherwise the rogue aps sneak past Opera Max before it can be authorised to function. In my case that's OK- it's used as a desktop all the time.

'Rstech-knile' also shows up in Samsung discussions - but like me, no-one seems to know what it is and/or what it does. I asked on this forum only because it shows up with the Android logo.

Bit of a mystery. I have to agree with you - it could well be spyware.

Thanks again, Mike.

Anyone who knows rstech_knile? What does the app does? Purpose? Meaning?
What I only know bout this app:
1. When it updates, it becomes "SDK CLIENT"
2. "SDK CLIENT" is detected as a threat (medium threat)
3. This "SDK CLIENT'' has a technical name "XKBPTEK.apk"
4.XKBPTEK has a website (notes.xkbptek.com) which my browser keeps redirecting
5. When you uninstalled the update, it will keep bugging you with the dialogue box "unfortunately, rstech_knile has stopped"
6.The solution to #6 is to factory reset

This one came up last month...

http://androidforums.com/threads/rstech_knile.935790/

I think it's very probably Chinese, might be spyware, but other than that, nothing much conclusive.

Try factory reset as something funky is going on there, and then see what happens. What tablet is it, make, model and Android version, but I'm assuming it's a no-name budget Chinese one, e.g. a supermarket cheapo, like Aldi Onix or Onda.

I've already seen that thread , though it wasn't fully informative .. that's why I asked again ..... anyways thanks again, you're right!! This( device) is not much expensive, though I bought it inside a mall ... it also restarts automatically and reap eats until it drains the battery , the problem when your device is not expensive!!!!!! BTW, I've already done 3 factory resets for this, trying hard not to mess up again!!

-Polaroid (Colby Kyros something) MID0704 made in PRC, PLR Holdings etc.

PLR IP Holdings is what was left of the bankrupt Polaroid Corporation(most people don't use instant film cameras these days), that uses and licenses the "Polaroid" trademark for whatever it can, e.g. cheap tablets from the PRC. And still the only information I can find and surmise about this thing, is what I've stated above and in the other thread.

That "xkbptek dot com" in your OP, is not even a registered domain name.

Right, I've seen those(your answer) and tried to find any other but your the only one replying with that .. Looks like Chinese likes secrets!!!

Secrets or sometimes Chinese language only, or things that no longer exist, which is what that "xkbptek" might be. It sounds like it might have been a company name, and the domain registration is now expired.

This could in be why this "rstech_knile" process is giving trouble, because the server it's trying to ping or phone home to is no longer operating. That's a guess.

BTW Onda, what I was referring to in the other thread and has this "rstech_knile", they no longer make Android tablets, and have moved onto Windows 10 tablets.

Yeah, the sound "tek" in the name , could have been "tech" In English something like that ... I also find some third-party apps with chinese characters in websites, help, settings, etc.

When I see those I always suspect there's a mystery behind it .... some adware apps that install automatically can't run and stops before initiating .... what could've they hiding? Some apps installed from untrusted sources install another apps.. china's technology is great though most are fake, null, worthless etc.

So you were so slow to answer, so I tried to explore this forum and found another thread a about utility apps ... after I tried to uninstall a utility app, I realize I had to stop my illusions and uninstall a utility app where I found Chinese characters ( app pre installed by manufacturer)
Its the King user Purify.. Now King root is the app that's preintalled and I configured sum settings and voila! The purify app just installed without internet!! I think these promoted apps are also installed when u install another app automatically and sometimes already run without your permission...

About that, after the app was blown to trash, it led me to Chinese website . I found some words in the address bar like "feedback", "king user" etc.

I might have been slow to answer because I've been out for most of the afternoon....LOL

Uhm... sorry but what is phone home to??

FYI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoning_home
Phoning home, in computing, refers to an act of client to server communication which is undesirable to the user and/or proprietor of the device or software. It is often used to refer to the behavior of security systems which report network location, username, or other such data to another computer.

It think it's taken from "E.T. phone home"

OK?

PS:
Our forum sticky about these devices is worth a read: :thumbsupdroid:

So u mean this Rstech_Knile may be the phoning home app or the pinger to the server???

Ahhhh.... they're always tracking our information .... spys, Chinese things etc.

Oh! That's why my antivirus app says that it is spyware!!!!! You're great!! Because it is not a threat but it resembles a threat!! Great!!!!! Such antivirus apps are sooooo idiot that they consider a system app a threat!!!! Hooooooo yeahhhh!! So all this time I'm fooling myself around!!!!!!!! :-D thanks for the info and help ;-)

And given what's apparently happened, that's where the problem my lie with it, the server it's trying to phone home to is no longer there, it's not taking NO for an answer, so it's crashing, causing excessive power consumption. Lousy coding probably. Maybe the only way to stop it would be to root and delete it, that's if it can't be disabled via Settings > Apps > All.

But we do give it a name... SPYWARE

Spyware is software that aims to gather information about a person or organization without their knowledge and that may send such information to another entity without the consumer's consent, or that asserts control over a computer without the consumer's knowledge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware

That's what I'm always cautious when dealing with rare/uncommon/odd app names ... luckily they name viruses "technically" or "scientifically", that way we may be aware of our apps!!!

Anyways, why are they interested in us? Were not famous personalities or celebs, so y do they had to do that? Fun? Troll? Tracking people? Polls? What's interesting in such normal people?

It just shows up a search page or a blank one

Yeh it's an unregistered domain. Because presumably whomever had it is no longer paying and so the registration expired. Likely the Chinese company is no longer in business, which often happens.

It's not exactly desirable or catchy, register it yourself for a few bucks if you want. :)
