Rumors on decent Android phone?

Define "decent". The Galaxy S line of phones are pretty much the top of the heap spec-wise and the Captivate is one of the better designed in the line.
 
If you don't like the Captivate I'm not sure what you want out of a phone. With a few apps you can get the phone to do just about anything you want.

Except getting a flash for the camera. I don't understand how such a "high end" phone like the captivate lacks a camera flash. Some people (like myself) also wish to have a physical QWERTY keyboard.
 
For me the spec's are close but not quite on par with some of the other Android phones like the My Touch 4G or Evo. Then there's the industrial hardware design which is not as appealing to me, but that's a personal preference.
 
How can the Captivate be considered decent when it's plagued with GPS and other issues! I have the HTC Aria (I love HTC products) which isn't the most "powerful" android phone but I like it and it works like it's supposed to. I was about to use my wifes upgrade and get the Captivate, giving her the Aria, but after researching, I didn't like all the issues the Captivate seems to have. Especially the GPS, I use that alot.

What I want to see is a great HTC Android device on ATT...they are putting out these Win7 (I'd rather have an iPhone) for ATT but why not Android?

I'm not plagued with any problems. I'm sure if people would lighten up a bit and read, they wouldn't be either. :) My GPs worked from Clemmons, NC to Memphis, TN. What else should it be doing?

This is Google. It should not only anticipate your destination, but have a fresh cup of coffee waiting for you when you get there. Pipe and slippers are only if you have a premium account. Admins get a loyal Cocker Spaniel at the foot of their easy chair ;)

I have not run into anyone in person who would complain about the phone..

And online "I've heard it has problems"

Becomes "I have one with problems"

Despite the person never really owning one to begin with >.>;

At any rate.. I have yet to meet someone in person with a legit complaint about the galaxy s series..

Also.. I like physical keyboards depending on the phone.. but, I'm glad sprint got the physical keyboard instead of at&t.
 
While gcobb and Snow_Fox might be some of the lucky few with a Captivate that has no problems (or they're in an area where other positioning methods make up for the faulty GPS), the tidal wave of complaints from people not so lucky with their Captivate cannot be ignored. There is indeed a quality problem with the phone, even if it's not 100%. Even if 10-30% of Captivate owners have no issues, it'd be nice if they didn't dismiss the other 70% as idiots complaining about a problem that doesn't exist, simply because they themselves are lucky enough to not be experiencing it.

It's unfortunate that this is AT&T's flagship Android phone.

I actually don't own a captivate at all.

However, I have a number of friends who have, and absolutely love it.

I have not found a person outside the internet that has had a problem.

It would also be nice if you didn't put words in my mouth. YOU are the only person in this thread who has said the word idiot.

Don't get so caught up in proving your point that you try and make the rest of us look like bad guys or like we were somehow outright condescending.

I am not a politician, I won't have mud slung at me as if I were one.

Now moving back onto topic. your "tidal wave of complaints" is stretching it a bit.. :/ Yes there are known problems with the phone. Any bit of research will tell you that.

However, to completely pass over the phone based on issues which may not even be a problem is ludacris. If you absolutely need a gps in your phone and can't live without it, that is fine who am I to judge?

However, if your only not considering the captivate because, you *may, possibly one day, for some reason need a gps in your phone* then your passing up what could be a great phone based on a perceived need which may never even happen :/.

Also.. I think it is utter arrogance you gave out statistics.. just because you "perceive" a title wave of complaints online really doesn't mean anything. Show me some statistics that say 70% of captivate users are unhappy with their captivate or feel its buggy beyond use.

For that matter.. the captivate does come with 30 days to return it if you decide you don't like it. So this raises the question if the captivate is that bad why didn't you return it when you could?

I highly doubt 70% of captivate users got it and said "MAN THIS THING IS GLITCHY LET ME KEEP IT ANYWAY!"

So please, for future reference, don't put words in my mouth and don't get on some high horse assuming that you know what the majority of captivate users experience has been..

How do you know 70% aren't perfectly happy and your in the 30% that is unhappy? after all if a million captivates were sold.. (and there could have been more sold) thats 300,000 complaints at about 30%... I highly doubt you were out there counting every captivate that is glitchy or had problems.. and "tidal waves" can be misleading online..

Also while I am at it, why can't the original poster evaluate the captivate based on their own criteria? What is a crappy experience for one person is a perfectly fine one for other people.

Come with me to XDA, and there's droves of unhappy Captivate owners looking for answers.

The lag, the GPS, the crappy TouchWiz, the this, that, blah blah blah blah.

Most people over there have resorted to using modified kernels with a hacked together version of i9000 ROMs to get a usable phone.

To be fair, most people on the XDA forums have a higher expectation and level of knowledge about the functionality than does the average user. And Snow_fox's point was that although there is a lot of noise on the internet about these phones, when in the wild, as it were, the majority of the users are quite happy and not really effected by the problems.

I personally have a Captivate that is my "play" phone next to my N1, which is the day to day workhorse. I have not seen the GPS issue at all, and neither have the three other Captivate owners i know personally (my son being one of them). The lag is tolerable and TouchWiz .... well you either like it or you don't but that's the beauty of Android. Don't like it and you CAN add a different launcher or flash a custom ROM.

I am in no way trying to deny those problems exist or diminish their importance for those who have been effected by them, but frankly a small concentrated group of unhappy users in device-centric forums can make a problem that effects a few users seem much greater than it is.
 
Lunatic stated the situation beautifully.

I try not to discredit or completely ignore any particular group's complaints.

The fact that there are roms floating around on XDA means whatever issues it may have, There are enough people getting it and enough people interested in it to fix those problems.

Look at what XDA is to begin with. Its a website dedicated to enhancing and altering the performance of mobile devices.

I am not saying performance issues are justifiable.

However, think about this fact. Online, everyone knows what jailbreaking an iPhone is and does.

I know barely anyone in real life who bothered to jailbreak their iPhone.

Yet, this is still one of the most popular phone's out there.

Let me say this again. If there are that many people who are that unhappy with the captivate, why did they not return it within their 30 day period of return?

I really don't think it would hurt to at least see if the phone meets your individual expectations before worrying about what problems other people are having.

Now keep in mind that as I say this, I know at least 3 people who are happy with their captivate in person.

If even one of them had said "no wait.. this phone sucks" I would be more than happy to throw that disclaimer up here.

However, at the moment, anyone I know with a captivate loves it and has no problems worth mentioning over it.

I really fail to see what the harm of letting people come to their own decisions here..

I will be the first to admit, I check online a lot before I decide whether or not I'm going to get a product. Especially phone's.

I am not against listening to the complaints of people who do have problems.

However, everyone has different expectations and there is no real way to measure the problems other users are having compared to the problems you will have.

I am an overclocker. On Overclock.net one of the biggest disclaimers you are going to get is never assume someone elses experience is going to be the same as yours.

For those of you who are unaware of what overclocking is, it means increasing the speed of your computer (or phone actually) outside what is spec'd by the manufacturer.

That mentality does carry over to phone's these days as well. Everyone has different needs and different uses for their phone, and there is enough variation on opinion that you can't assume any given experience is going to be what you have.

it doesn't matter what phone you have, I promise there is at least a thousand unhappy customers out there.

People are a lot more prone to tell people when they are unhappy than when they are happy.

I have read a complaint on just about every android phone out there.

Evo, Desire, Nexus one, Captivate, Backflip, and more.

No phone is perfect, and not everyone is going to happy with any given phone.

However, the more users a phone has, the more complaints your likely to see.

We all have different expectations and need form our devices.
