Run Hot alot, airplane mode runs cold ..?

i am still unclear about what the heck is running in background that makes my phone run hot/warm.

I have my wifi off, but data on...and shut apps down...regulary.

Then i place in airplane mode, and it cools down..

It could be due to excessive apps but that isnt always the case
Overheating is caused by the CPU the more it has to run the more it will heat up if i play higher end games.my.device gets warm because the CPU is running more
Just curious but is your device rooted by any.chance?

Are you shutting apps down with a task killer? You really shouldn't use any type of task killer on Android. Do you have a consistent cell signal? If it's searching for signal it will get hot and drain the battery.
