running app

is there anyway you can stop an application from automatically starting a service in the background.
For example I have just restarted my phone & it is telling me that it is running the services listed below;
Facebook
Dropbox
Solo Launcher
Settings
Allrecipes
Whatsapp
Let's Deal
Words With Friends
Hotspot Shield VPN
Anamated Photo Frame
Smart Cover Pro
Calendar+
Alarm Cock Xtreme
BatteryWarning
Atci_service
Contacts
Google Play Services
Google Search
Llama
Swiftkey

I am sure I don't need half of these apps/sevices running in the background & it is just chewing up my battery when not in use
Can i disable them?

You can disable the app if you don't use it, but that's not quite what you asked.

Personally I'd recommend installing a decent battery monitor (e.g. GSam) and finding out whether any of them is actually using a significant amount of power. Then if any of them are you can decide whether you need them or not.

Well, you could disable alert polling. For example, you could disable Facebook refresh in the settings, but you wont get notifications or messages until you open it up. Solo launcher is your launcher. You shouldn't even think of stopping that.

It might be possible to keep some of them from loading, but most of them are providing services to other apps that you may not realize until you disable them. The other issue is that Android is designed to optimize memory, which means that it will try and fill unused ram with cached apps and/or services so they can be launched quickly when called by the OS. If you disable this group it will be replaced by a different set.

If your concerned that they are draining your battery unnecessarily, then I'd take Hadron's suggestion and install a battery monitor to see if they actually do use a lot of power and we can then address it at the app level.

If you are only worried about clogging up ram, then relax and don't worry about it. Android does a decent job of managing that for you.
