Help Running Apps question.

I charged my phone overnight as i always do. By 1.30pm having recieved just 1 phone call my battery was completely dead.As i watched it draining away i looked at my running apps.there were several apps running but i have no idea why some would need to be running.
Some of the apps were settings,my vodafone,outlook.com,messenger,facebook,com.qualcom(no idea what that even is),bluetooth share, google services (android icon), google services ("g" icon),live wallpaper and google keyboard.

Why are all these running and would this be the cause of the mega fast battery drain. How can i prevent this happening again.I did turn my phone off a couple of times while watching my battery bleed to death right in front of me.

Most of those apps are the ones that always run in the background (you can't type anything if the keyboard isn't running, mail has to run to receive email, etc.) It sounds like a bad battery.

It could be a bad battery, more is more likely a wicked wakelock keeping the battery from going into deep sleep. If you install a battery forensics app like GSAM or similar, it could help determine what is causing it.

It's only happened the once, today.Until the update my battery was fine and since the update it wasn't as good but nowhere near as bad as today. The last 25% drained in less than an hour.

Sounds like a wakelock since it was fine before the update. Often times when updating you end up with an app that can't handle the new version or runs out of control and a factory reset often fixes the issue.

As jhawkkw suggested, I would install Gsam battery stats.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
It will give you a way more detailed description of what is going on, more so than the stock battery stats and it also has a wakelock detector integrated into the app.
If you can narrow it down to a rogue app, you can either go into the system settings for that app and clear the cache and data or uninstall the app and then reinstall it and see if it still causes massive battery drain. If all else fails, you could perform a factory reset as well.

That Gsam might be your ticket. I use an app called Glympse when I go on bike rides so that my wife can know I'm not dead and track me as I go. On Saturday I noticed that although I cancelled the tracking, closed the app, and turned off GPS, my battery was being drained a ton by Glympse using GPS. However, the only way to know was to look at the battery usage because Glympse was not listed in the Running Apps list. Could be something similar.

That's all well and good if i knew how to use that app, which i don't :D
I just want a phone i can use,not loads of gumph i don't.I fear it's just another app draining my battery.
Maybe if people explained things that they post it may help technophobes like myself that aren't interested in learning all this stuff.
As much as i love the Google vanilla android concept this will be the last Google phone i'll own.Hurry up Silver or Motox+1. Who decided on that crap naming of a device lol.

If you install the app and post screenshots of the main screen and app Usage screens, we can help you work through what it means :) then you'll have more knowledge than you started out with!

I've used that app on all the android phones I have owned and it's never affected my battery life.

But at the same time, if you don't want to add another app to your phone, I understand that position as well.

I'm not sure that I understand this POV. Any phone can have this type of issue with battery after an update, not just Nexus phones. People with iPhones have complained about these types of battery issues after an update; the difference is that iPhone users largely don't have access to apps like this, to figure out their problem -- they typically have a choice of factory resetting their phones or Apple releasing another update to fix their problem.

Even if you had a Samsung or other Android phone, you could still run into this type of issue updating -- the only difference, you don't get as many updates. In fact, often the non-Nexus phones have even more issues with upgrades, in part because of all the "extras" that are bundled in, even the ones you don't want.

This isn't a Nexus issue, or even an Android issue.

Thx for your reply. How do i upload a photo.Do i need to go through photobucket ?.

You can either click the attach button (paperclip icon) that shows up when you post a reply, or you can upload to imgur (or photobucket etc) and post that link here.

It definitely looks like apps and the screen are the heavy causes according to that screenshot. If you click on apps in the list, it should open a page that lists them in order according to the most battery usage. If you could post that screenshot along with what percentage you keep your screen brightness on, that would be helpful.

Okay, i think there might have been a misunderstanding. jhawkkw meant if you click on apps in the gsam app (app usage)

Alright. That's what we need. However, the stats reset when you charge, so we need to see that screen after a day (or significant time off charger) to help diagnose what is using up your battery. :)
