Running old games in a VM

It's a bank holiday weekend and I got a bit bored. So I fancied a trip down memory lane, and dug out my old copy of Ghost Recon for PC.
I installed it in a Windows 7 VM on Ubuntu. The game installed Ok, but when running it I get the initial splash screen, but my hopes were dashed. The game doesn't start.
Do you reckon it's not possible to do this? Driver issues?

You using Oracle Virtual Box? Have you got Enable 3D Acceleration checked, so that Direct-X can work properly? Also have you installed Guest Additions, which is the drivers that Windows requires to run properly in the VM.

This is how I got XP setup in Virtual Box on a Mac, that I use for a bit of retro gaming sometimes.

Thanks Mike. Yes it is Virtual Box. I've got the guest additions, and extensions installed, but 3D acceleration isn't enabled, and video memory a bit low.
I'll give that a go..

Hi LV, once you've checked enable 3D, sure you'll have to re-run Guest Additions again, to enable 3D in Windows. I left video mem at 64, think the default is 12. If you got 7 running, should know if it's working properly or not, if you can get Aero Glass rather than Basic.

Not sure if this is resolved, but it might be worth checking BIOS settings to enable virtualization. Not sure the spec reqs. of Ghost Recon but I was able to get Stick of Truth running in a win8 VM on a laptop with 8gb ram and an i7 from 2013
