Running processes

Apologies if this is in the wrong area.

I'm new to android and just trying to get my head around it all!

Looking at the processes I have running I see some even though I don't have particular app open.
Is that normal? As a couple are using in excess of 60Mb each, one using over 100mb - music?

It's normal to have many processes running on your phone, just like a computer.

Some people use task killer apps to reduce the number running, but in general it's not a good idea to use. Android is good at managing apps and will close them when needed.

What apps can people recommend to monitor cpu usage?

You need background processes to run the operating system on your phone.
