Rusted/missing dishwasher prongs

What can I do about them? They're probably not helping the dishes get done right. Also, the upper basket or whatever it's called is not sliding right. It's getting stuck and maybe coming off the track. The slides sometimes stick out more than they should and I have to push them back by hand. All things considered, I can see why ge discontinued the nautilus.

Rusty prongs and tray in a dishwasher. That doesn't sound particularly hygienic to me, and I wouldn't want to be eating from anything "washed" in this machine. Replacing the tray etc. is really the only fix.

And the other problems with the baskets coming off their tracks and getting stuck, probably because the tracks and guides are worn out, sounds like this dishwasher is really on its last legs and needs replacing.

Unfortunately, replacement is not an option. If you guys are right about it, maybe the only alternative is hand washing. At least I know enough not to put plastic in there.

Here are some probably crappy photos of inside it. They don't show the cat but he doesn't spend ALL his time on the dishwasher. Sometimes he's more interested in the fridge.

There are worse things than hand-washing dishes. (Or so I've heard. :o)

From what you've described, I'd stop using that dishwasher immediately. At least with hand-washing the dishes, you'll know they're actually getting clean.

Meanwhile, maybe start a dishwasher fund, saving up until you're ready to buy a new one. It doesn't have to be the highest tech, whiz-bang, talks to your smartphone, high-priced model. Check ratings and reviews for lower priced models and you should be able to find something perfectly capable of cleaning dishes.

Seriously, how do I get the top rack unstuck? It's jammed to the point of being unmovable. I at least want to be able to slide it out all the way.

I'm assuming the moving parts are seized up. I would try something such as a cooking spray for a lubricant. I would not want to introduce the dishwasher to any sort of toxic lubricant. Spraying the tracks or rollers and such should aid in the basket removal.
With the rusted prongs and such.. it might well be time to move on.

I understand that money may be an issue, @Rgarner, but I really think it's time to send this dishwasher on its merry way...out the door. (Or use it for storage.)

If you're unable to buy a new one, there's nothing wrong with washing dishes by hand. If you're in a water-conscious place like I am, do be mindful of wasting water while doing the dishes.

Honestly, a nice new sponge, a clean dishpan and a bottle of dishwashing detergent will provide much more sanitary results than what you're likely getting now from your dishwasher.
