Help S3 battery ... disappointing

SanRek

Lurker
Hi,
I have been using S3 for the past two weeks, the phone is excellent, all features are great apart from the battery it doesn't last even a day. My typical usage is 20-30 mins voice calls, an hour of internet for emails, txt message and news. The cell standby time has been around 50% more than the screen on time.
I have installed the latest update and have turned off wifi, blutooth, GPS, location services and auto sync features. Have reduced the screen brightness, the attached screen is for today, had charged the battery full today morning at 7:45 the screenshot was taken at 8:30 today can someone on the forum please tell me if this is the normal performance of the battery (if so I am disappointed with the battery) or is it a case of faulty battery.
Have used phone for 15 mins voice calls and screen on time was 1 hr 45 mins.

Have you tried bump-charging? It's helped me since I did it with all my phones (Evo 4G, Epic, Epic II and the GS3). For more info - here's some links that may help:

What is wrong with our battery gauge?

How to BUMP charge

From 730 in morning to 830 in the evening. If you use it with normal use and you have 38% left, I would say that is some good battery life? I don't understand.

Unless you are saying from 730 to 830 in morning and that it went down 60% in one hour?

Am I seeing things right? You still have 38% battery life left. If that's the case you have pretty good battery life. Nothing to complain about

Edit, with the 1:45 of screen on time you mentioned it looks like you will be getting around 3:30 hours on a full charge. That falls into line with all tend reviews I have seen. Your current battery life is normal and should have been expected

Ok, so it looks like, by gauging the usage chart, that the phone levels off when you're not using the screen and the phone is (mostly) idle and dips when the device is awake and the screen is on. This looks pretty normal. If you do not use (or don't mind losing) push notifications, like email, Facebook notifications, Google Talk, et cetera, you can disable autosync. But your battery won't fare much better, as your major drainage is happening during screen on time.

That 4.8" screen pulls a lot of juice. Even with a 2100 mAh battery supplying it.

Is this your first smart phone? 13 hours with 40% left is excellent. Do you know what your screen time was? Tap the line where it says screen to get detailed info about that entry. Screen time is a good indicator of how much you actually used the phone that day. If screen time was only 30 minutes, yes I'd say there's a problem. If it's 2 hours plus, you got a good smartphone there.

Also, ignore the cell standby entry. Samsung mistakenly entered 34mA instead of 3.4mA in the framework file so the reporting is faulty for that entry. The error DOES NOT increase the battery usage, it's just a reporting error. There's a fix for rooted phones at XDA, but hopefully Samsung will send out an update in the next month.

Thanks for the feedback, yes it was charged fully at 7:45 am and the screen shot was taken at 8:30 pm. All in all had used it for 20 mins of voice call and the screen on time was 1:45 mins effectively meaning it has used 70% of the battery for roughly 2 hrs usage!!

Note I had turned off auto sync for email, facebook, linkedin, switched off location service, GPS, Wifi, and notification so would expect it not to do any of the smart phone features.

Can I just make an obvious point? It is reckoned that Samsung have sold about 10 million S3's, each of which has a battery. The batteries are not clones of each other and it is possible that you simply have a bad example of the S3 battery. So before condemning the phone, try another battery.
