S4 System Recovery, phone crash, no command

I have an Android Samsung Galaxy S4 originally through ATT and then with Straight talk through ATT network. While my son was playing a game, the phone crashed and would not come one and just continuously vibrate. When it finally did come on, it appears as "android system recover <3> LRX22C.I337UCSGOK3" I was able to select "reboot system now" and the first time it worked. Of course, I lost everything, but now it did the same thing again after only working maybe 3 hours and it is back on the same screen. It will briefly pop up the android logo and say something about no command. I cannot get it to do anything now. I have removed the battery and replaced the battery only to be directed to this same page initially with no options to go anywhere else. At the bottom of my phone in yellow it says:

Applied the CSC-code; ATT
Successfully applied multi-CSC

Someone please help me fix this phone. Nothing was pressed and nothing was being updated (unless in the back ground) and have not cleared any cache or anything like that. He was playing a game and the phone crashed for lack of a better word.

Ahh... If it weren't for our kids.

It sounds like the OS has got itself in a pickle and doesn't know how to proceed with boot up.

As long as the screen lights and there are intelligible words on the screen from time to time before it reboots and starts to loop again, your phone should be recoverable.

Glad to see you've made the sane user choices to remedy the situation and not thrown the unit out the window nor have had neighbor take a look at it yet.

A few questions:

How comfortable would you be following a step-by-step troubleshooting list to restore the phone OS? -- It's really not that technical a thing to do, and it'll save time and money.

Can you reply with the last thing on the screen you see before the phone quits?

Does the phone become unusually warm or even hot while it's rebooting?


So you're aware, I'm on a rooted Note3 on Straight Talk from T-Mobile running the latest Note7 ROM.

The Note3/4 phones can still rock the house.

When the phone comes one at the top left corner of the screen it will say "recovery booting" followed by the Android Guy quickly disappears and then it says "No Command"

After this it stays on this screen which contains the following:

Android System Recovery <3e>
LRX22C.I337UCSGOK3
Volume up/down to move highlight:
power button to select

Reboot system now
apply update from ABD
apply update from external storage
apply update from cache
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
reboot to bootloader
power down
view recovery logs
enable cp logging
disable cp logging

At the very bottom of the screen it shows the following:

# manual mode #
--appling Multi-CSC...
Applied the CSC-code : ATT
Successfully applied multi-CSC

This is all the phone will do. Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to capture and write such a detailed sequence of events list. Information like this is most helpful and makes all the difference when troubleshooting boot errors.

You describe a common error that can happen for various reasons, but the usual suspect ends up being a system update that failed to complete, throwing the operating system into what is known as Recovery Mode.

The user is then given several options to choose from, each intended to help get the Droid up and running again.

Let's try one of the more gentle options as a first run test.

Ready?

Once you've ensured the phone has more than 75% battery power, detach it from any cables.

By your description, the phone is already booting into Recovery Mode, so just press the power button like normal and wait until you're back to the menu options screen.

Use the volume up/down keys and navigate, stop at Wipe cache partition, then press power to select.

You may be asked to confirm, select yes, and press the power button a second time.

Wait until the sequence completes then navigate to 'power down' and press power.

wait 15 seconds, then press the power button like you would normally.

Check the results.

If the phone still boots into recovery, shoot me a reply and we'll move onto the next method.

Let me know if you have any concerns, questions, or hesitations before starting.

The steps above are all non destructive, so no worries about losing data or apps.
