S4 Textra / Lockscreen problem?

Recently got my Samsung S4, loving everything about it. Replaced the stock SMS app with textra and I noticed that my lock screen no longer displays " new message " notification. I thought this was the lock screen's issue so i tried it with a few more other lock screens, still no notification. The screen would lit up, but no notification will pop up. I do, however, still get miss call notifications. Does this have to do with the fact that Textra also does not have an unread count function? I am currently using Nova Launcher Prime.
Any kind of explanation and help would be appreciated

I would try uninstalling textra, and installing another texting app (Handcent, Chomp, Go sms, several good text apps in Google Playstore) and trying it to see if perhaps textra is the problem.

That "unread" functionality was provided by a widget installed on the lockscreen that was part of the stock SMS app. I have found several references online that Textra does not provide lockscreen support. If another texting app (as suggested above) is not to your liking, I'd look into lockscreen replacements such as Executive Assistant or DashClock.
