Help S5 battery discharging when switched off

rogc

Lurker
My phone up graded to 5.0.2 over the weekend. Now the battery discharges 30% when the phone is switched off. The battery app seems to suggest that Wi Fi is on all the time even when switched off. Does anyone have any ideas how to stop this happening. Tried ee but they were unable to help.
Thanking you in advance.

Try rebooting the phone a couple of times, and give it a few hours with WiFi ON so that the apps can properly update to accommodate Lollipop.

IIRC, that seems to be a common thing when 1st upgraded to 5.0

Wi fi is permanently on, its been rebooted daily since the weekend, even taken the battery out.
Ive now done a factory reset, so will let you know if that fixes the issue.

Since the factory reset, the functionality has improved, no lag on launching applications, however the phone still dropped 15% whilst switched off for 9 hours. I suppose a couple of % is down to the reboot but this still means that the battery is draining whilst off. Any further thoughts on causes and solutions please.

As you know all batteries discharge when not in use. Yours seems to be discharging too much, but that can happen if the battery is getting on a bit and is used a lot. i.e its charged/discharged frequently. It could just be coincidence that it coincides with the upgrade to 5.0.2 I would try another battery to rule it out. Mine for example loses ~ 4-5% overnight.

After a bit of plying around with the settings, I have confirmed that location is draining the battery when the off. I switched location off before shutting the phone down, and there is no battery drain when switched off. Samsung are aware of the bug, and stated last week a software update would be released this week, nothing so far though. If your suffering battery drain when switched off disable location and see if this solves the problem.

No update from Samsung. Any ideas why this is happening ?, anything i can change as its a pain having to switch locations on and off everytime i shut down the phone.

To make life easier on yourself, try this.

Install MacroDroid * MacroDroid - Device Automation - Android Apps on Google Play

Create two macros.... that's all you will need, and you can have up to 5 macros and the app is still free.

1st macro:
Trigger: Screen Off
Action: Set Location Update Rate, Select 60 minutes
hit the right arrow:
hit the right arrow:
enter macro name: Set Location Update 60 (or whatever you feel like calling it)
hit OK

that's it and might be all you need...... unless you have a reason for the GPS to update more frequently.

If you want the GPS to update more frequently (behind the scenes, has nothing to do with apps calling for a GPS location), then repeat the 1st macro and choose a shorter time lapse between updates.

please let us know how/if this helps you.
if this macro works for you, at least you will not have to manually turn Location on/off.
