Help S7 Edge Text Limit

Katie

Lurker
Hi Fellow Androids
My S7 edge tells me I've reached character limit on a text message. It's never done this before. How to up the limit? Nothing I can see it in Settings....
Appreciate help on this one.

Regular SMS is always limited to 160 characters maximum anyway. That's how the SMS system works. Did you have any updates at all?

Many SMS apps will let you seamlessly enter as long a message as you like, sometimes might tell you though, but then it actually splits it into separate 160 character SMSs in the background, and the recipient's SMS should concatenate them together again into a single message.

The Samsung S7 Edge (well all Samsungs actually), have a character limit of 450 characters. Once you go beyond that, it turns into an MMS. And no, it cannot be edited in the settings as Samsung doesn't have that. That's basically the reason why I use chompSMS.

Make sure in your messaging app that the input mode is not set to unicode. GSM or automatic is best. Setting it to unicode will limit your messages to 80 characters.

Unicode doubles-up the number of bytes used, i.e. two bytes per character rather than one. So it can seamlessly accommodate things like Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Klingon, emoji, and any other non-Roman characters.
