Safe to kill with Taskiller

Ziani

Android Expert
Hiya, Whats safe to kill with Taskiller? Did not realise there was soo much running. If I kill things can I just manually start them up when needed? Would I still receive email/messages? I see the things highlighted in white does use any power, just yellow needs looking into. Thanks

You can close everything, although I use the Hero, and closing some things that the phone needs to operate will cause the phone to crash and restart itself. So make sure you close only programs not needed by the phone.

Thanks Kaine, I also use the the Hero, thats why I asked the question as I did not want to kill what the phone uses. If I kill something the phone needs then it will crash, beboot and bring back alive what it needs? Do we need ro have messages, Gmail etc running in the background for us to be able to receive them?

I was thinking the same thing but what I was wondering was what apps/tasks do you guys/gals stick in the "Ignore List"?

I have Touchflo, Touch Input, (when I stop these the screen goes black and the OS restarts) Taskiller (Stupid to kill off the app that kills app), Netcounter, ChompSMS (so I don't have to keep restarting this app), Clock (I found that if I killed my clock sometimes the alarm wouldn't go off even though there was an alarm icon in notification bar)

Would be nice if there was a list of what all the com.htc.XXXXX tasks done.

I know TasKiller ignores three main threads by default, as killing them would disrupt the phone's operations: Android subsystem, Phone and Dialer? (It's something along those lines)

Killing all of the running apps shown in TasKiller will, at most, reset TouchFlo. It's good to do on the Hero, anyway, periodically.

Thanks JoeC, sounds a good idea as you say to occasionally do this so as to clean it up :)

Yeah, if you accidentally close something important, it will restart itself (weather the phone crashes or not). If you close Gmail and things, they'll restart themselves.

What I did, is restart my phone, run Task Killer, and tell it to ignore all apps that start with the phone. Then any other apps that start later can be close later, leaving just the important apps running.

Agreed--the important apps will restart themselves, except for Google Voice... One of its primary functions is to intercept the dialer, and that you don't want to kill.

There are a number of things I don't want running that start with the phone, like Peep, Browser, Footprints, etc. So I have to kill them all upon restart.

Thanks JoeC and Kaine.

Thats sounds like a plan Kaine.

Whats the difference between ignore and kill?

Thanks

Thanks JoeC and Kaine.

If you add something to the Ignore list, then when you use the "one hit kill everything" button (think this only applies to TaskillerPro) then Taskiller leaves those apps still running. So anything you want to use all the time, like Netcounter for watching how much data you use, you can add to Ignore list and it will never be closed by Taskiller.
