Samsung 10.1 Updates?

Samsung has a bad reputation for updating their devices.

I have a galaxy tab 7.0 plus which would still be stuck in 3.2 in Canada. I believe in the US, it was officially updated only to ICS. Meanwhile, in UK, Austria and South America, it was updated to JB. I finally found a copy of the UK version and updated it using Odin. Fortunately, it works.

My theory is that Samsung would rather sell you a new device than update their old ones. Probably why their sales numbers are so good. I will never buy Samsung again.

Updates depend on a lot of factors. For example in the case of your Galaxy Plus if it's carrier branded, if the carrier doesn't approve of sending out tje update, Samsung wont.

Sometimes they just suck at updates if a device didn't sell very well, like the case of the s3mini.

My galaxy tab 7.0+ is wifi only. I just dont understand why different countries got different updates for the very same device. As far as i know, in Canada, my tab is still stuck on 3.2. Samsung Canada published a bulletin more than a year ago saying we would get an update. The last time i called customer service six months ago, they told me to be patient and wait.

The infuriating thing is that the UK version of 4.1.2 works perfectly on my tablet. Why couldn't Samsung just push that version to us?

If their policy is that they wont support their device if it did not sell well, then that is another reason not to buy Samsung.

Actually, that's true for any brand, not just Samsung. Whether its Motorola, Toshiba, HP, HTC, or whatever. A device that did not get popular has very limited chance for getting an update.

However, sometimes they do publish the update for unpopular devices. A quick check of the Sammobile firmware website shows that there is actually no official Canada version of the P6210 (your device), and that the several versions of P6210 are already updated to either ICS or JB, except for a carrier branded P6210 WiFi only version by Cellular South, and Brazil (probably related).

Also, you have to take into account that updates are also regulated by your government, in Canada that's the CTRC. All updates must go through them for approval before release. So even if Samsung published the update, as long as it's not approved, it's a no go. This practice for firmware update has been true since the days of Nokia supremacy.

Wifi device is regulated by CRTC? Or is CRTC blocking updates to ICS, JB or KK? I dont think so.

Samsung Canada announced that they would updatethe tab 7.0 + but have not followed through. The only difference in the P6210 is geography. My tab was samsung's premier tablet at the time. And to not get a single update when the same tablet in other countries did makes no sense. The numbers dont lie. When iOS comes out with an update, in a few weeks 60% of the apple devices will have updated. On the other hand, when Android comes out with an update, there is only about 6% adoption after six months to a year. And i suspect a lot of that adoption is from the dumping of the old device for a new model.

If Motorola, HTC etc, develop the same atitude towards after support depending on whether the model sold well, then i would not buy from them either. My advice is to either buy a Nexus or Iphone. With the other phones, you may be left without full support.

Well, flagship devices get support. The thing with the iPhone is that it's so popular as a single model, and it's a single model, so it's easier for them to push updates, and more recognizable by authorities. And yes AFAIK, CTRC and similar agencies regulate ALL communication devices, if the CTRC acted similar as other countries. I am told that's the way it is in US, China, and the UK.

In the end, among the Android manufacturers, Samsung has one of the best records of updates if we are talking about flagship devices, much more on lower end devices. Sadly some models really do get left out, and from the looks of this, it's Samsung Canada's fault for not bugging the CTRC.

In any case, if you feel that you would rather leave Samsung, then do so. It's your prerogative. It's not your fault the division in your country sucks. You can try mailing them again, but I won't get my hopes up.

Not really. They're slow on updates at times, but they tend to offer software support longer than any other OEMs for comparable products. Examples:

2011- Galaxy S II launched on Android 2.3, finished on 4.1.2, competing products stopped at 4.0
2012 - Galaxy S3 launched on 4.0, finished on 4.3 (Exynos), upgrading to KitKat (Snapdragon), competing products stopped at 4.1 or 4.2.

A lot of Samsung's 4.1 devices have flat out skipped 4.2 and/or 4.3. The Note 10.1 2012 version, for example, went from 4.0 to 4.1, and is now in the process of getting 4.4.
