Samsung Galaxy 5 - downloading pictures from message

when friends send a message with photos it just says 'downloading' but never actually downloads anything. Does anyone know how to get these pictures downloaded??
Any help will be muchly appreciated

called in to my local telstra shop while i was out and turns out its a data download thing which isnt part of my plan. strange thing is i could get pictures on my old phone but not my current one - same plan
