Help Samsung Galaxy S Batter/data usage problem...

cdavi

Lurker
I am in Canada on Bell and I have a Samsung Galaxy S. Yesterday I noticed my phone was extremely hot and noticed my battery was nearly dead, but I had ZERO applications running. I plugged it in and it charged a lot slower than normal, but everything still works properly. I did notice that my data indicator is always showing that it's sending and receiving data (red and green arrows) where as before yesterday it would be grey unless it was syincing or I was using data myself. It's sucking through my battery life at an alarming rate...~5% per 10 minutes when it is idle with nothing running and the screen off.

I have tried turning off the background data, syncing, etc... and nothing has helped. I did not download anything yesterday so there are not any new programs causing this. The only thing I did yesterday is I had a video running on the phone for a long time but my screen is set at the lowest brightness and it appeared normal when I was done the video and closed the application.

I am now running the battery to completely dead then recharging it while off to see if that helps, but I truly believe it has to do with the data indicator. What could cause data to be constantly running if I have both sync and background data off...

My battery usage is also at nothing with only the display and cell standby...period (94 and 5% respectively).

Suggestions please.

In all of this. I dont see you mention "I rebooted, I restarted, I shutdown and powered up" . Did you try that?

And what could be running. Well for that you kinda should have downloaded some program that would show you whats eating your CPU. You did check the SGS own task manager right? (That doesnt show much anyway :) )

For these I use system panel and its monitor.

There is no such thing as ZERO apps running. They were in the memory and one got stuck. OR you have even some virus :D and is sending your personal data already . Check with lookout :)

Thanks for the reply,

Yes I rebooted, shut off, reloaded, all the stuff you'd try first including removing the battery and letting is sit for a long while.

I am loading "lookout" now...but I may have found a problem and haven't searched the forum yet for a solution so it may already be answered. System appears fine via lookout...

I got my phone to work normal by shutting down some of the applications running in the background. The problem started again when I opened up my email via "Samsung Email". I have a feeling despite the fact I have syncing turned off it is still trying to communicate with my email for some reason. If I go into 'Running Services' and shut off Z7 Service it stops everything. That being said, I just tried opening Samsung email and everything is working normal so who knows :).

Lets see how the battery drain/recharge works...almost drained...

Hey cdavi, just curious if you had a solution to this issue. I am experiencing the exact same symptoms on my Galaxy S. Also on Bell, so frustrating to have to charge your phone all day long just so it has enough juice for the ride home.

First try a factory reset, this will get rid of everything inside your phone but often times it will get rid of the drain.

Secondly, Samsung email is known to drain battery so I would suggest not using that and getting a third party (or you can always use Gmail :p)

You didn't mention if you were using a stock ROM or not or whether your on 2.2 or 2.2.1 so I'm assuming you are stock 2.2. I would suggest flashing another kernel and a new modem and updating to 2.2.1 rom. I'm also on bell and I can tell you for sure that JVE and JQ1 both are working for me.

If you really want to make your phone fly, flash a custom ROM and then you'll see what this phone can really do ;) There's lots to pick from and all will unleash your phone

Hello! I have had the same thing happen to my Samsung galaxy S but I am with Telus. My phone gets very hot and my battery drains extremely rapidly and this has happened periodically (about 4 times) over the past month. It seems to resume after I take out my battery and put it back in. It will stop once I turn off my backround data transfer but if I turn it back on too soon it will continue. This will go on for a day (once it lasted two). I have also noticed that there is a large amount of data transfer during that time and periodically throughout the night during hours when I am not using my phone. I use gmail, but also have my university email account synced with my phone.

Could this be due to updates? My friend suggested that that my phone could be getting hacked and is transferring data to the hacker. Is this possible?

I would prefer to restore factory settings as a last resort but will only do it if it solves the problem for good.

Any advice?
Thank you so much!
