Samsung Galaxy S Wifi Only

I had my Galaxy S l9000GT with an overseas provider and I'm now in the US. Obviously there is no service on the phone, as stated on the phone's desktop screen. Can I set it so I can use it with just wifi and use apps such as Whatsapp through the wifi. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I figured if you can bring a small laptop anywhere and use the wifi then maybe its possible with a smartphone. Please advise.

I don't see why not. :)

On most of my devices, I can turn airplane mode on, but still turn the wireless radio on via settings and have WiFi work no bother.

That worked. Thanks alot.

Question, I'm downloading a free app from Google Play Store and it required me to enable Background Data. The phone is currently in airplane mode with the wifi turned on. Does this mean it is using only the wifi? (read: No data charges) ??

Yeah, background data just means it will perform actions (sync/update etc) without you actually using the app, not that it's using mobile data instead of WiFi.

Make sense?

yeah i often disable mobile network when i am in an area of low coverage (eats battery life to use Sprint with no signal) and when wifi is available and strong. using an app like Google Voice for texting and Groove IP Lite for calling through wifi and just giving folks my Google Voice number (used by both apps) helps a ton. that way i can call out and receive calls/texts via wifi and if i am not near wifi but have mobile network coverage i can still use 3G data to use those same apps.

An Android smartphone without signal/activation is really no different than an iPod touch compared with an iPhone. although an Android phone/iPhone that is unactivated can still make 911 calls and use the GPS
