anyone know of good solid case for the phone? i have the one through sprint, and on my old Evo 4G i had an otterbox and loved it but otterbox doesnt make one for my Epic

Seidio's got some types for the Epic.

(that one is for your phone as well) I have the Ultra Crystal version, along with the Seidio case above and highly recommend it! Came from the Otterbox Defender and I don't regret ditching that big fat ass case one bit!

i am using the case-mate tough case for my new epic 4g. There are other samsung epic cases from otterbox and Incipio as well that you might want to consider.

The otterbox is amazing but the new ballistic shell gel case for the GS2 is very similar. It runs for $34.99 (well worth it!)

I found the harder shell types (depends on product) will damager cell phone instead of protecting it. It will leave marks when removing/installing. Brands like switch easy know this which is why they always have a silicone/soft material before the harder shell get's installed.
