Help Samsung GT-S5830 - can not play .AVI video

I have a problem to play .AVI, .WMV and .MPEG videos stored on my Samsung Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830) SD card.
I have tried MoboPlayer (even with a codec) and mVideoPlayer, but it did not solve the problem.
Please help.
I would prefer a Free player, if there is any choice.
 
If the videos are too complex encoded, then no video player can handle it.
Is this a recent issue?
Could you play the same videos earlier?
Can you play those videos on PC?

Get Format Factory on PC, open Advanced - Media File Info, browse to the video file (try avi) and post here the the full result. We can see if there is something wrong with the video.
 
These are older videos I used to play on the PC. I have tried several files (.avi, .mpeg and .wmv). Check the result from Format Factory:

Yeah... I think you will have to convert those videos (codecs not supported).
You can use Handbrake software for that (freeware) or do that it Format Factory itself.
Choose H264 codec and put videos in MP4 container.
 
I have tried Format Factory, but it can not play the converted .mp4.
I will try .3gp. I have an older .3gp video which plays OK.

There is an easy setting in Handbrake - open the video and select "Universal" preset.

Otherwise, you can post the MediaInfo results of the converted MP4 by Format Factory that failed to play. Maybe some parameter needs to be corrected in the conversion process.
 
I have used H264 codec and put it into a MP4. I have also reduced the resolution to 480x320 (the resolution of my GT-S5830). Did not help.
I have tried also .avi (AVC(H264) and also WMV2 codec, also with reduced resolution). None of this helped.

This is the problem. You need to make sure that this is "Baseline Profile" and not "High". Then your converted video is H264 in MP4 container.

Alternatively, you can use Format Factory to convert using MPEG4-SP (or Divix/Xvid) encoding in avi format. Again keep the screen resolution equal to that of your phone (480x320).

I will play a little with the settings to find the best functional quality, but the resolution was not the problem. After switching to DivX the problem was solved.
Is there any relevant difference between .MP4 and .AVI? Is there a reason to use a specific container (because of better file size or image quality)?

Containers are like bags: some are very limited and old (like avi), and others are new and full of different pockets, like (MP4 and mkv).

That being said, there are only certain codecs/containers that are native to Android (like H264/MP4). This means they will be easily decoded and will be supported on all phones.
Others (like Divx/avi) will have to rely on software decoding, and my not always produce the best results.
 
I have found out that there is a problem if I convert the video to a 16:9, 480x272 format (even if all other settings are the same as 4:3, 480x320).

I'd recommended to leave the Aspect Ratios aside for the moment and concentrate on video resolution. Ace wants to have the videos on 480x320, so you can try to convert videos on that resolution. If the source videos have 4:3 or 16:9 AR, then you will have to crop some corners.

Hi, Mobo Player should work. Hav u tried soft decoding in mobo player? I have tried it in same phone - GT 5830 Galaxy Ace. I was able able to play .AVI, .WMV and .MPEG videos with Mobo Player - No need of any conversion.

For soft decoding, do long press in the video thumbnail in mobo player and select soft decoding. Try it.
