Samsung keyboard select/replace issue

I'm using the supplied Samsung keyboard on my Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. If I select some text and start typing I would expect the typed text to replace the selected text but this does not always happen. Could it be that some apps (e.g. Google Search) are overriding the behaviour of the default keyboard? I don't recall having this issue on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running Android 4.4 KitKat.

I have also noticed that if, part way through typing a word, I press delete to correct an error, prediction then only includes newly typed text and not the whole word resulting in incorrect predictions.
