samdisk12, thanks. Removed gmail, turned off device, pulled battery, re-installed gmail and account, …. and same result. Strange in that "Email" account, **@aol.com, works as before. Will keep futzing with it as not life or death issue but imagine it might be something updated in google distribution as device dates back to 2014. Thanks again. ~ be
