Help samsung s5 and sony xav602bt radio

I recieved a sony double din xav602bt radio for my christmas. It said it was android compatible but i cant get mirror link to work and when i plug it in via usb it says "usb device not compatible". I am using a samsung galaxy s5. I have downloaded the app remote sony recommend but when i press the keys on the radio such as "maps" it just brings it up on my phone and not the screen? All i can do it recieve phone calls and listen to music via bluetooth (not really worth the £300) i downloaded the firmware update through the sony website and that has made no difference. Al i want is for my maps to work via the screen so i dont need to use google maps on my phone when im driving. Am i doing somthing wrong or will is it just not compatible?

I did a little poking around on Sony's website, and found the following statement. It refers to the Galaxy S3, but might be relevant for the S5:

To use MirrorLink™, Samsung Drive Link application is needed. For more detail, please check your carrier's website or Samsung Apps website.

Availability of MirrorLink™ and Samsung Drive Link application for Galaxy S III depends on country, carrier, and model number. For more detail, please check your carrier's website and Samsung Apps website. If Drive Link application is available, it is distributed in Samsung Apps or Google Play.
Firmware version of AV Center must be starting with prefix "JR". To check your firmware version, in the AV Center Home screen select 'Settings' => 'Firmware version'. New firmware can be found on the Sony e-support website.
Please surely close Drive Link application running on Galaxy S III intentionally after disconnecting USB cable.
If MirrorLink™ connection is not established correctly, please disconnect USB cable and close DriveLink application running on Galaxy S III, then try to connect again.
Since the display is always visible when using the mirror links, the battery may get exhausted. You can control the consumption of the battery by taking measures such as lowering the brightness of the display.
The movement of the arrow key operation of the wireless remote controller is not guaranteed. Please update to the latest version of Drive Link application.

As for USB, I guess the question is whether it requires USB Mass Storage (which most Androids do not have since Android 4) or whether it can work with Media Transfer Protocol (a Microsoft standard which is the default in Android since version 4).
