Help Samsung S5 broken, black screen/need photos

My AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 has a broken screen (black screen). What software should I use to root it. Samsung Kies 3 sees the phone but wants me to enter a password but I can't because the screen is black.

Hi!
Um, if it has a broken screen, what do you hope to accomplish by rooting it??? I mean, you can't see the screen, so the phone is useless until the screen gets replaced.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding you?

Samsung support told me that third party software was available that would allow me to view and copy my data from the phone to my windows PC as long as the phone would power up and it does.

Still won't happen because before a PC can detect the phone, it has to be unlocked. What the Samsung guys told you would work if your phone didn't have a password. But it does. Which is why it's recommended to make regular backups while your phone is still working fine.

Well I guess I'm just ignorant but Kies 3 connects to the phone but it request that the password be entered on the phone but since the screen is broken I can not enter anything. I don't know the password anyway it belonged to my grandson that was killed in the accident that broke the screen. I was told that if I rooted the phone I could bypass the password requirement and save the photos that are on the phone. He had hundreds of photos on the phone at the time of the accident. If anyone knows how to recover the photos and data from this S5 please help. Thanks.

You need access to the googlemail account attached to this device and know log in data so you can access Android device manager. It should see the phone. From there you can reset the code. Obviously you will need to replace the screen but if you can get as far as changing the code you should be able to retrieve those treasured photos

Did it have an SD card? Pictures can be on internal storage but like me, maybe he had it set for pictures to go to the SD card which does not require having it connect to a pc.

Once you are able to access the phone thru Google, you have more options available.

As soon as you can get it unlocked thru Google, open Play Store on the web under your son's account... hope you have that info. Then find Samsung Side Sync => * SideSync 3.0 - Android Apps on Google Play

Install that to the phone, also you will need to install the PC version on your PC, once that is done, you can access the phone via the PC just like as if the screen is working.

Another good app to push onto the phone from the web via your PC is MyPhoneExplorer. Once that app is installed to the phone, and the PC version of the app is on your PC, it will access the phone's contact list and SMS messages even though the phone is still locked.
* MyPhoneExplorer works even when locked and can't access screen

It will also allow you to download any data off the phone you want, provided that you can get the phone unlocked... works just like Windows Explorer.

You do know you can have the screen replaced without losing any data? Plus if there is an SD card, there's high chance all the pictutes and videos are there.

Definitely do check the SD card like the above poster said. I'm betting the Samsung reps told you that already too (they should have).
Best of luck :)

no sims or sd card in the phone. Was used in the replacement phone that AT&T supplied. I did get into the phone enough to see no data or photos was in it. I was able to write to the phone so I guess the stuff got erased some way. Thanks for all the replies.

Long story short: Have you plugged it into your PC and then tried to unlock the phone by touching the black screen?

Hi!

My S4 took a nasty fall about a week and a half ago and my display went out too (totally black). The screen isn't cracked, and the phone still powers on. I had a microSD card in at the time..but to my horror, everything wasn't saved on there as I had thought. I feel your pain. I had 1000's of photos, sound recordings, memo notes, ALL of my contacts..

So, you may have tried this, and it is worth trying if you haven't - Do you have a swipe passcode on your phone? I do. You see, I know that you can only change the volume on my phone by unlocking it first. So I swiped away at my black screen and it unlocked! (I knew, because I was able to change the volume). I plugged it into my computer and was able to successfully unlock it a second time...and.. access EVERYTHING. If you had a pin passcode, if you could get a photo of what the passcode screen looks like, and then..you know, try to guess and touch your black screen...

Of course this would only work if your touch screen is still functional..

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I was able to get into the phone with the program from Wondershare. To my dismay nothing remained on the phone. Thanks to all of you that responded. If you are an administrator you can close this thread.

I Know this thread is over a year old but I was hoping you could help. I have downloaded the sidesync app through the play store on my google account as well as on my PC. My phone is not accessible because my screen is gone. In the play store it tells me the app is downloaded to my device but I cannot find the option to actually open the app through my google account online tht would then sync with my pc. I can open it through my PC but it continues to search for my device...
