The subject doesn't tell the whole story of my query.
What I really want is a wifi only pocketable android tablet that runs bleeding edge android without provider restrictions. I don't think this exists, so my second choice is an android phone with no contract or activation, where I just use the wifi.
I was thinking of a Nexus One, but those are gone. As far as bleeding edge I'm afraid that means there is no phone that currently can run Android 2.2.
Since I would be buying without contract that pushes me towards T-mobile, which offers an EM+ plan that can be cancelled any time, even shortly after activation. Since its unsubsidized the 35% Bing cashback takes it down to $325.
Is this a good choice, and if not what would be better?
Some other questions I have:
1) Once I cancel the activation, will I have any trouble using it as wifi only Android tablet?
2) Its only Android 2.1. Does Samsung have a good track record of timely Android updates?
3) Can I get Android updates without a current T-mobil activation?
4) While phone features are not a priority, could I use it with a pay as you go T-mobile sim for an occasional voice call?
5) Is there anything that Samsung/T-mobil does to limit functionality or software availability? I think its a good sign that is easy to root.
