save maps for use with GPS

so thing i've noticed is that you can easily be out of 3g or wifi range but still have gps

say you're hiking or driving out in the country somewhere
(seems like that's really when you would need a map)

so an app that would allow you to store the maps while your in 3g or wifi contact

you would turn on the app and it would save any visual map data you browsed along with coordinate reference that the gps would understand

now the resoltion would be limited to what ever zoom you've browsed at
but that's okay

save this to your memory card as a session(give it a name) that you could later delete if you needed space or wanted to do update map

this way you could preload map data for area you going to that your pretty sure won't have network access

and then if you in the area instead of just getting a little blue circle on a grid (lotta help that)
you'd get an actual idea of where you are and how to get out of there

now all you need is a solarcell or handcrank usb charger

think about it

a good pushpin function would be a bonus
set/move map markers
name them
goto specific ones etc
maybe tie it into the radar app?

sounds like there a couple apps with some of this function but descriptions always seem like a little more/less then what i would want to use

locmark app seems to do the bonus part... thanks for adding that app

still need an app that stores maps for when your out of range which is what the first post is about

that's probably a little trickier but i think it would really make the phone's mapping really worthwhile in non urban area's
