Help Save stock ringtones?

Is it possible to save the system ringtones that came on the phone to use with another phone later on? I can't find the ringtone files. I imagine that they have them hidden someplace. Would root access give me access to them?
 
System sounds are not available as loose audio files and you won't be able to allocate them, using regular file explorer.

However, there are many forums and android related sites, where you can find "system dumps". From wallpapers to system sounds, apps and complete dumps.

The audio files will have to be placed in respective to their function directories.
Preferably on the phone's memory. And I will explain why in a moment.

If you connect your phone to a computer, using USB cable, you will see on the phone's memory, 3 folders.
Alarms
Ringtones
Notifications

If you don't see it, you can create it yourself. The device will then look into these directory, whenever you try to set up a custom tone, and load them accordingly.

I would recommend using some ID3 tag editor, like iTunes, select the audio file, open file info, and place nice name in the Artists box. You could name all your custom sounds with underscore prefix (_soundName). By doing so, they will be grouped and listed together. Much easier to allocate among the stock sounds. And nicely organized.

Why not placing sound on external memory?
First, the sounds are normally small, so if you are concern with storage space, these files are negligible.

Secondly, when restarting the phone, your OS boots up first, and once it's done, it will only then mount the external SD card. This result in sound preference to be set back to default, as upon boot, the system can't allocate these files.

I guess that's it.

Thanks so much! I had no idea there were resources like that on the Web. That's so cool. Now I have all of my favorite ringtones so I can use them on a new phone if needed.
