Scared to update to 7.1.1

I'm sure most of you have heard about the new 7.1.1 update bricking some 5x devices. A few weeks ago I went ahead and opted into the 7.1.1 beta to see how it operated. Overall experience was good but it definitely had weird quirks like blank texts and Play Store force closes among other apps. I opted out and am back on 7.0 November patch. I know LG is issuing refunds but I didn't purchase this new and I have no sales receipt although I do have box, original IMEI on it and other plastic materials it came with. I inquired to LG if I would get a refund back but haven't heard anything back. Regardless of whether I have a receipt or not I think they should stand behind their product and issue a full refund if I should encounter any issues. I'd like to update but I'm also worried my phone will be bricked, that LG won't help and I'll be left without a phone (I need it for my job) What's your guys take on this? Should LG issue refunds for those of us who don't have receipts?

From what I've read, LG/Google have been offering refunds for bricked phones without too much hassle so that shouldn't be a worry.

I installed the 7.1.1 update a few weeks ago - basically, as soon as it came up as an OTA update - and I haven't noticed any issues. Having said that, I don't use too many apps and I haven't done anything fancy with the phone - everything's vanilla, with none of the standard Google apps replaced.

My advice though, would be that, if you are worried, don't bother with 7.1.1. I've noticed very little exciting new stuff.

I used the Android 7.1.1 beta until 7.1.1 OTA came to my phone and all is well. I think my phone's stability is helped by the fact I have on 64 apps. None are games. None are social media.

Well I bit the bullet and did the update as it popped up. I held my breath the entire time...and so far (knock on wood) all is good. I did a clean factory reset and had my data backed up. Lost nothing thank you for sharing your experiences

Is anyone in a similar situation as me and still hasn't gotten the 7.1.1 update yet? Last update was in November.

I still waiting also. I haven't seen a single post that anyone has gotten the OTA without being in the Beta Program.

I wasn't in the Beta program and as I say, I got the 7.1.1 OTA update weeks ago.

Not sure how Google prioritise the rollout of OTA updates: I thought it was US first then the rest of the world - in alphabetic order so the UK came close to last ;) - but maybe not.

I received the December Security Update last night, which I thought was weird because it was reported that it would be included with the 7.1.1 update.

I got the December update last night, applied it, and now have the dreaded bootloop issue. I've been reading it's a hardware issue, but so coincidental that I am only experiencing it after applying the December security update.

I received 7.1.1 last night, immediately afterward I received January's Security Update.
No problems with my 5X as far as I can tell.

Just saw this and went to settings to do a manual check for an update and there actually IS one! I don't think that's ever happened before ..

Presumably it's the Jan security update.

Installing now ..

It tells you exactly what it is before you touch "download."

I got 7.1.1 last night as well. We'll see how this goes................

My device is pretty much unuseable. Using my Nexus 4 for now, and my insurance replacement ($80 deductible) through Nexus Protect is arriving today. Wonder which firmware it will have.

I've been reading it it actually a hardware issue even though it coincidentally broke the same time I applied the December security update.

To the insurance company, I don't think they care how it broke.

Received my replacement phone today from Nexus Protect. Phone looks pretty new compared to my Nexus 5 replacement I got from Google. Came with packaging and everything. It is running 6.0 and latest security update is October 1, 2015. Eek. Update available is 7.1.1.....

From everything I've read the issues has nothing to do with software versions. It's a hardware issue caused my a faulty mother board. The soldering on the board fails after heat cycles cause issues. Like charging your phone, using games, anything that increases the temperature. LG is no longer offering refunds and are repairing devices or offering replacements with the G4 and G5.

So, go ahead and update to 7.1.1. Version has nothing to do with it. These problems started when people were still on 6.0. If it makes you feel better, take the phone out of the case and set it on an icepack to help it stay cool while updating.

That's the same as I was reading, but it strangely bootlooped right after I upgraded to 7.1 from 7.0. Minutes afterwards. I updated to 7.1.1 and it seems to be working fine on the new phone. Now I'm trying to tackle wiping my old phone before I send it back, but I can't get it booted up long enough to do it in either regular mode or the boot recovery mode.

It worked fine for me. Only thing I noticed was a few apps like Facebook, messenger, Amazon, etc would force close more often
