Schedule Gmail sync?

Hi all. I'm having an issue scheduling my gmail to update my contacts. They sync fine between phone contacts and Gmail contacts when I manually run the sync from 'Accounts and Sync' but they never seem to add automatically. I can schedule Exchange Activesync and Facebook updates but not Gmail.
I've been told that this is because gmail uses push updates but that doesn't seem to be happening automatically.

I'm using a Desire S with 2.3.3

There is no scheduling with gmail, including gmail, calendar, and contacts. They are automatically pushed to your phone if you add them from a computer. Make sure you are adding them as "google contacts" and not "phone contacts"

Ok in Accounts and Sync I have 'Background Data' selected but not 'Auto-Sync', does Auto-Sync need to be selected for this to work?
