when powered on, the screen blinks off very slightly, this has started recently. i have had the fone almost a year.

It is most likely an app that is acting up. Have you installed anything lately? Try uninstalling it and see if that stops the blinking.
If it doesn't, back everything up and do a factory reset.
If that doesn't work, I would take the phone in to where you bought it, as it sounds as if it is still within the warranty period.
