screen failure & myphoneexplorer won't connect

(See updates below!)

This afternoon, my phone screen suddenly changed to a blur of colored dots. Since I have myphoneexplorer loaded on my phone and on my pc, I thought I would be able to access my phone by usb. However, since marshmallow, the phone automatically connects as "charging". It requires me to choose a different connection. But I couldn't do that because I couldn't see my screen!

Does anyone have any suggestions, how I can bypass that default setting for the USB connection?

I'm not sure what was wrong with my screen. However, last night, I put a new, tempered glass screen protector on my phone. There is a small crack in my cell screen, which is now covered by the tempered glass. Could that be a problem? Could that have caused a problem?

The phone worked fine, both for internet, phone, and texting... until this afternoon.

***Update. I removed the new screen protector -- and my phone is working! Any explanations? (It is not a name brand)

I still can not connect to myphoneexplorer. I'm getting an error about the usb connection. The SmartSwitch program IS connecting.

****Update 2. OK, so now I solved the usb connecting problem: Somehow USB debugging was not set. I fixed that, and I'm connecting to myphoneexplorer.

STILL, if I had NOT been able to use the screen, does anyone know how I might have accessed my phone?
It still seems to default to the option for USB charging, instead of file transer.
