Screen On When Touching The Screen

When I'm at my desk, tired of pressing the button on my Samsung Epic 4G to turn on the screen. I don't want to keep the screen on, I just want it to come on when I touch the screen. Is there an app that can make this happen?
 
The problem with this is that in order to detect a touch even the digitizer (touch sensor) must be powered on. I believe this also means that the whole screen must be on. On some phones with AMOLED screens the screen can be on without using to much power, however Android also keeps the CPU awake when the screen is on.

So screen-on-after-touch would most likely be a significant battery drain on the current generation of Android phones/OS.
