Screen won't come on when power key pressed (sometimes)

Ev7

Lurker
When my S5 is locked & the screen is off, if I press the power button the screen may flash on for a fraction of a second and then go dark. The keys (back, etc.) at the bottom of the phone light up as normal but do nothing when pressed.

Pressing the power button a second time turns off the key lights. Pressing the power button the 3rd time is the same as the 1st time and the cycle repeats.

Sometimes (maybe 1 in 20 times), pressing the power key causes the display to come on and stay on and the phone is fully usable.

The phone has not been wet or sustained any physical shock.

Does anyone have any idea if this is a hardware or software issue or know how to fix it?

Many thanks for any help.

Sounds like the cpu is just trying to cope with a bad put together app..there must be an application or two that is freezing your system..
If you try to uninstall one by one you can get to the button of it..

Let me know.

Just to rule out a power button itself as the issue try turning the screen on with the home button instead.

Mine wouldn't come on with either button. The 1 in 10 or 20 occurance that the OP mentioned is similar to the frequency that mine would work.

Backup and save when you have it working, Ev7. Safe mode and factory reset we're of no use on mine.

It is a hardware problem. I backed up the phone and did a factory reset. The phone still failed as described. It also fails when using either button (home or power). Plugging the power cord in works so I can use the phone until my new one arrives.
