SD card is resetting Droid

Hi All.

I kept getting the running out of space notice, so I was moving whatever apps I could to the SD card. Suddenly my Droid locked up, then reset itself. When I restarted it, and tried to go into Manage Apps, I got a "calculating", then the red-eye reset. Over and over.

I powered it down, took out the battery and the SD card, replaced the SD card and the battery, same thing. No way to Manage Apps.

So I took out the SD card and restarted. Now I don't have the problem, but I've lost everything on the SD card.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks!

Droid1 has froyo so could be moving apps stock.

I'd do a factory reset at this point, if your SD card is fried then factory reset is last option anyways.

I was in Manage Apps, looking to see which apps I could move to the SD card. I guess I have to do a factory reset or replace the SD card. No matter what I do, any attempt to access the card causes the phone to reset.

Edit. I didn't do anything to root the phone. Frankly, I'm not even really sure what that means. Do they come rooted? And what is the benefit of rooting your phone?
