You can have .apk files there (mine came with some), but to actually install them there, in runnable form, I think requires a later version of Android. Dunno, I'm new at this myself, but that's my impression. Also, it's apparently something that has to enabled in the app, judging by a lot of comments in the Market asking for this to be done for various apps.
