SD card type?

Silly question but........
Why don't you get the old card out?
Devices can use a verity of cards. My sony use's Micro MSDP and MSDP, some use Micro sdhc's and there are a varity of other different types.
Easyest way is to just get the old one out and compare it using www.google.com(.uk if your from uk)

Andorids usually use micro SD or micro SDHC
They further classified wrt speed
2,4,6,10
Class 10 are the fastest providing 10MBps transfer while other providing 2,4, and 6Mbps

What does the speed really mean? If I get a new card should I format it before putting it in the phone?

speed rating are how hast the card can be read and wrote to. If you have a 10 rating card that is the fastest you can buy at this time. So basically, if you are moving apps to the card or taking huge pics, they can be wrote on a speed 10 card at 5 times the rate of a speed 2 card.
and the cards will come pre formatted

What is the type of micro SD card that cell phones use? I want to make sure I buy the right one.

It's best to refer to the phone's user guide. There may be a maximum size the phone can utilize. You already said it's a microSD, the phone propably supports also microSDHC (SD without the HD can be max 2GB). If so, all microSD and microSDHC cards within the size limit of your phone, will work, regardless what "Class" it is. Bigger class means faster card, but it depends on the phone if it can benefit from, say a Class 10 card. Anyway you probably want at least Class 4 card, if Class 6 (or 10) is not much more expensive buy it instead.

When you put in a new card, I think it's best to first format it with the format utility in the phone. That way you can be sure it's formatted the way the phone wants it.
Some nerds may format it with a computer, creating partitions and stuff, but then you need to know what you are doing.

How do you tell what class it is?

Its the number in the circle usually. The manufacturer usually gives a description too.

^^^ Thats a class 2 card .the 2 number in circle indicates the class .:)

The one I have is generic. It don't have that.

Download the app and run the test 3/4 times !!

if 2 < Read and write < 4 then it's a class 2
if 4 < Read and write < 6 then it's a class 4
if 6 < Read and write < 10 then it's a class 6
if 10 < Read and write then it's a class 10

This is not an accurate method though :) .Some times my class 4 crosses the 6MB/s mark !! .

But usually the class is the minimum Read and Write speeds an SD card can achieve .
When a manufacturer says it's a class 4 ,the card will give speed 4 MB/s and above no matter what .
.It may give 6 MB/s but never 3 MB/s

Cheer !!:D
