SD card

My 128MB SD card finally gave up the ghost yesterday and I went online to buy a replacement.
The new cards have 64GB of memory !!!!!
I see also the introduction of memory card readers?
My question is therefore, what on earth does anyone need 64GB of memory for in their camera and would 64gig blow my PC and the reader is some sort of buffer.
I've been previously just slotting the 128 into the appropriate slot?
Help?

If your camera is around 6 - 7 years old or older chances are it can't use a 64GB SD card - the largest it could use is 2GB.

SD cards over 2GB are SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and will only work in devices that support the SDHC cards. Check your cameras manual to see what it can support.

Same is true if you have a SD card reader in your computer. If you have a newer computer you can insert the larger SD cards into it without any issues.

I was the designated photographer at a wedding and easily filled a 64GB (might have been a 32GB) every day, for 4 days

Cameras that can shoot more megapixels take pictures that take up more memory, and a lot of camera now shoot HD video, which will also take up a lot of space.

The memory card reader is just to stop the need of using a cable to connect your camera in your pc (and if you've had an Olympus one, you'll know the pain of losing the cable!)
