Security Apps?

The-Truth

Android Expert
K, and this is just a quick what do ya think question but whats youre take on seccurity I use Avast tried trustlook, I guess I'm just asking for a non-false positive succuriry app if I'm nt already on one with Avast here? no rush catch ur train holler bck wen U can. Thks in advance

To expand a bit, get apps only from the Play store. A few third party sites may be ok if you know they are 1000% trustworthy but most aren't. An example of a safe one is F-Droid for things like AdAway which Google no longer allows in the store (of course this only matters if you are rooted, but just making the example-). But in general stay away from outside sources for apps and you'll be much safer.
Also in the Common Sense vein scrutinize the permissions for apps before you install them, if they look fishy skip that app and find another one that does the same thing and has only the necessary permissions. A prime example of this would be the many flashlight apps that want access to everything on your phone when all they need to do is control the flash. Obvious red flag right there.

99% of my apps come from Play Store.

I've always used Norton's on my desktop. I use the free Norton's app on android and scan each .apk that is brought in.

The price is right, it's automatic, and I figured ... what can it hurt.

A very long time ago there were 45-50 apps yanked out of Play Store that contained malware. They had been available for download for a while. This is ONE instance a very long time ago. I have heard of no others since then.

I,'ve read somewhere that Go products are no good aswell U have a take on that? and last but nt least is there a safe flashlight in playstore?

Ya I only use playstore myself, I'll give F-Droid a try thow I suspect both of wich have alot of the same apps maybe nt idk. And as far as that toolbox app with the flashlite thks but Im lookin 4 somthin just a lil lighter as I only want the flashlight I found an app off playstore called privacy flashlight its a very tiny app and I'll do all the diggin I can to find out about it & each and every app I ever download from this point on. Goodlook on all the input all of U!

On the subject of launchers other than high speed forget animation settings, I notice lil 2 no difference in performance stock or custom rom and I've tried hard 2 like nova & most other launchers seam worse idk, & I'm sorry but I like organizing my apps in such a way, & 4 a so called "highly customizable" launcher as is claimed that's a pretty big feature to leave out & might I add a simple one to incerporate it would seam. Sorry Nova launcher fans just seams unnecessary to use on any newer device.

You say you "like organising your apps in such a way", but don't say what way that is ;)

(I like to have no app launchers on my homescreens at all, but my main apps in categorised folders in a rotating dock - a feature that stock launchers don't generally have. Then I use the app drawer only for my less-used apps, where alphabetical is the easiest way for me to find those, but I stick with the original android "continuous vertical scroll" style rather than paged style as it's just faster to use. So yeah, we all have different ways of doing this).

By organizing I mean putting my apps where I want them within my drawer Nova doesn't have that feature, atleast not the free version.

I like my browser app and hotspot, WiFi teather, txt app, dialer communications and such if U will one one page. Freedom kernel busybox SuperSU etc. on another window in my drawer. filemanager, foldermount, apps 2 SD etc. on another etc. etc. if this elaboration better helps U catch my drift.

My bad Hadron & I definitely mean U no disrespect but man I just gotta tell ya ur pic makes U look juuuuuuuust like Rick Springfield, lol I'm just saying no punt intended my man ur alot of help. just seams like developers and ; administratots, minus Earlymon, love to take advantage of the opertunity 2 down a Joe 4 not knowing what the next guy ;might, Everybody's at different stages U knw and alot of devs and whatnot are awfully snippy, at the same time I feel the devs frustration on jackass questions ppl ask or comment on that have nothing to do with the situation or subject, however forums are to broaden knowledge and get a lil and or give a lil help. thanks again.

You can define tabs for the app drawer in Nova, and put different selections of apps in each (optionally leaving them in the main drawer as well). So you could have a tab for games, a tab for communications, etc, but I don't think there's an option to arrange them within the tabs. I use folder organiser widgets in a rotating drawer as my alternative to that (which works with different launchers).

One thing I'll note: your list included one app which we don't discuss in AF (Freedom), because its commonest use contravenes forum rules. Not a problem, just letting you know so you don't inadvertently get involved in a banned discussion in future.

As for my avatar, it's "Ace" Rimmer, an occasional character in the old UK Sci-Fi sitcom Red Dwarf (a parallel-universe version of one of the regular characters). I promise that in real life I have neither a fur-collared gold lame spacesuit nor a mullett (though I do have a pair of aviator sunglasses left over from the 70s...).

Lol that's great man funny as hell my bad thought it was an image of U lol. hmmmm parelel universes I like the sound of it I'll have to see if I can find Red Dwarf on YouTube er something & check er out. & my bad all I mentioned was Gamethreorys Freedom kernel, thts really a no no?

I haven't seen anyone down or dog you yet.

This is just forum text - don't try to let yourself read too much into people's motives, you're liable to get it wrong and no one wants to discuss motives.

Anyone speaking up to help you is being your friend, and no one has time for dogging anyone.

Almost everyone's avatar is not an actual picture of themselves - of course, mine is one of the exceptions.

That's all from me, nothing to add except thanks @Hadron! :)

IMHO antivirus is kinda pointless. Instead of antivirus apps install Common Sense. Use it at all times. That is the most effective protection. The biggest threat to Android security is Android users.

You're right sir...
But... sometime you catch (web is so polluted) something you don't want.
I got on my cell : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.comodo.pimsecure&hl=fr
and this one I use when I want : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.malwarebytes.antimalware

and for permissions : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=biz.bokhorst.xprivacy.installer&hl=fr

Ya, I've ran maleware bites/gave er a try 2-3 times but I was partial to Avast & thought any app with SU rights were good, Earlymon put me up on that not exactly being the case. But ya so you're saying its a positive thing 2 have a security app for web searching & such?

I'm gonna do a lil more diggin maybe get back with Hadron he's been helpin me on a lil security dialog, but ya after I get 2 the bottom of all this security good/bad convo/resolve, I may just end up checkin out Comodo er something.
