seeking app or launcher for while-driving or "car panel"

My HTC 'droid has what they call a "car panel" for use while driving.
It is a neat idea, but the features and configurability are limited.
Does anyone know of other app(s) or even launcher(s) that make things
easy and more convenient while one is behind the wheel?

Several folks have suggested the "roll your own" approach. I'll need to
add that too my list of things to try eventually.

Until then, I'll see what these others offer and will report back to this thread.
