Selfie stick does not activate shutter

Hi, I have recently bought a selfie stick and to my great disappointment pressing the release button on the stick appears to not control the shutter on my phone. When I press the button, the camera app immediately aborts and the Google Assistant app starts up.

Is there something in my settings I can change? Or will resetting factory standards prove the only remedy. I am a bit loath to go there, as it involves so much work/time to re-install all my apps, setting them up etc. I am hoping it is something simple, but the nagging little voice at the back of my head keeps saying the opposite......

Not necessarily if you have a Google account and your device is backed up. After a factory reset is reformed and your Google account is valid with your device, all your apps will automatically install after you log into that device with your Google account.

I tend to think a Factory Reset is hardly necessary to solve your problem, that's a bit drastic and it'll still leave you with the original problem of just getting that selfie stick to work with your phone anyway.
What model selfie stick is it? And what phone do have and which version of Android is it running? Is the button on the selfie stick a wireless one (probably relying on Bluetooth) or is it a physically active one (the button end moves something on the phone end)?
