Sending Texts while Phone is Locked on Eris

Is it possible to continue sending a text message after I press the red lock key?

I keep sending messages and putting my phone in my pocket and then twenty minutes later will open my phone and realize it never sent. Is there any way to press send and then be able to immediately press the red button to lock the screen?

I do this all the time. They always send. I use Handcent though. IMO, its a much better MMS + SMS app.

I use Handcent too and it still happens.
