Service cutting out

everytime my boyfriend turns his s6 on his cellphone service is cut for a bit. it wont let him send/recieve texts or calls, but his data is still active. he goes through straight talk, but they arent much help. how do you fix this?

Has he shut it completely off and turned it back on? If you Google this you'll find that Android phones occasionally need this or at least restarted. Try this first.

he has, but it hasnt fixed anything. i looked it up before and it said it was a common problem in s6's and to dial a certain number in his phone, but it didnt work.

-- Since this problem is apparently centered on his cellular connection, try re-seating the SIM card, removing and replacing the SIM is just a manual way to re-connect the tiny metal contacts on the card with the ones inside the card slot.
-- Another thing to try is restart his S6 into its Safe Mode. While running in Safe Mode there's no third-party apps getting launched in the background during the boot up process so it's just a 'clean' Android operating system. If his cellular connection is working properly while in Safe Mode that's an indicator some app he installed is creating a problem. Determining just which one is the culprit will be a process of elimination but at least it's a start to a solution. Instructions on how to get into Safe Mode:

-- This is a remote possibility but he might want to try a clear the system cache partition. Clearing the system cache is a non-destructive process as it doesn't affect any user files/data. The system cache itself resides in it's own dedicated partition, completely separate from the user data partition (where all his files and things are stored). It's also something that needs to be done while his S6 is running in its Recovery Mode. While in Recovery Mode its a text-only interface and requires one to use buttons to navigate through the menu options. So boot up into Recovery Mode and select the 'wipe cache partition' option (this step should only take a few seconds), then just reboot the phone to see if this makes any improvement.

The question whether this is a phone problem or a cellular service (Straight Talk) problem isn't really apparent so this might not have any affect at all but it doesn't hurt anything to try.
-- If this problem is with Straight Talk's service, try installing this app from Open Signal:

It let's you do a speed test and map out the closest cell tower(s). There could be an issue where if he's in a more remote area it could simply be a matter where it's just on the marginal edge of the coverage range of the closest cell tower. Which also brings up the questions on whether this problem happens in just one area or all the time no matter where he's located?
