Service in NYC

Anyone have any experience with VM's service/data rates in NYC or the New York area in general? I am thinking about getting the Evo 4g but want to have some confidence about the service and rates.

Thank you in advance.

I don't have experience, but based on this PC Mag report, the 3G data rates don't look to good. The 4G (WiMax) looks pretty good, though, and I seem to recall someone here using the Evo V 4G in NYC and reporting that it is typically pretty good, at least outside (inside YMMV).

I've had Evo V 4G for over a month now, here are the results (based on my recollection).

area code 10016 - 4G over 12mbps, 3G 1.5mbps
area code 10017 - 4G over 5 mbps, 3G range from 100kbps - 1.2mbps
around 10017, 4G 5-10mbps, 3G range from 300kbps-1.5mbps
Chinatown/Little Italy - 4G 7-10mbps, 3G 300-700kbps
Flushing - same as Chinatown
Ridgewood (11385), about the same as 10017
Columbus Circle - 4G (didn't test), 3G 2.5mbps
midtown west (around 20s and 6th) - 4G 5mbps, 3g 1-2.5 mbps

Traveled to Albany - on highway 87, in general gets from 700kbps to 1.1mbps on 3G, no 4G.

Union City, Jersey City - don't recall 4G. 3G fluctuates wildly from 100kbps to 1.2mbps.

By no means this will be the speed you get. Just give you a general idea of the speed. Also, I had Optimus V before. 3G on OV could be worse / better. however, the ping time on Evo is so much better that you feel the speed is faster.

BTW, Evo V 4G has a lot of call/text issues. Before you decide on getting the phone, read up on it.

Thanks a lot for the information. I was not aware about the Evo's call/text problem, I will have to look into it.

Would you say that the 3g side is satisfactory to you? About how long are you waiting for various things to load on your phone at those rates? Are you happy/content with the service for the price? As a fellow NYer were/are there any other alternatives you were/are considering?

Much appreciated.

I am satisfied with 3G access on Evo. Optimus V's 3G is not very good. The reason is Evo uses Sprint servers in NY area while Optimus V uses servers somewhere in Kansas.

I use 3G mostly for email, calendar sync, and some web browsing. Pandora works well on 3G. I don't stream video, so just the basic "webbie" stuff. 3G load on Evo is reasonable. I don't have to wait long. 3G on Optimus is another story, it could be really fast or takes forever.

Evo's problem Radio Interface Resource Shortage FIX.

Will PM you on why chose VM in the first place.
